Subject: Garnier limbs
I was planning on making a treehouse this summer - not too expensive. in three parts a. the platform b. the access c. the house. As in my previous thread i'm having problems getting suitable bolts. How have you guys done it? Has anyone tried to get the Garnier Limbs manufactured locally in the UK?
This website gives the techy stuff as apparantly the design wasn't patented.

I love doing these sort of projects myself and any help would be appreciated.

I built a carrier for 6x6 timbers out of 3/8 plate steel.  It is gusseted below the reciever for the timber, and has holes above and below to allow fastening to the tree with 3/4 x 10" lags.  I also made a hole on each corner and welded a nut to the back of it and ran a carriage bolt through with the bolt head facing the tree and a nut welded to the outside end of it.  This allowed me to adjust the angle of the bracket on the tree (ever so slightly) until I squared up all my brackets.  Once I got the joists in place and some weight on it, it was unnecessary, but it helped on the front end.

I was recently in touch (March 07) with someone in the UK who was putting together an order for some Garnier Limbs based on the design given at Treehouse Engineering's site. The price being quoted ranged from around £50 per unit to around £20 for a large order (>20).

The Garnier Limb is not very useful by itself, however. The simplest solutions would be to either get the external part of the bolt threaded to accept a beam directly, or add a metal fitting which can slide on the bolt for a flexible joint. Several cables can be suspended from one bolt due to the high strength, though this would require a spreader plate or similar to give space for all the cable terminations.
